Issa Rae and Prentice Penny’s return to HBO now has its leading men. Shane Paul McGhie and Dasan Frazier have been cast as the leads in Untitled Male Friendship Show, Rae’s new half-hour comedy pilot at the network.

Rae wrote the pilot and serves as an executive producer. It follows Menzel, played by McGhie, a 28-year-old barber who dreams of becoming a sports manager and serves as the professional best friend to JB, played by Frazier, a 27-year-old boxer on the rise.

Together, the two work through ambition, insecurity, loneliness and the mixed blessing of success inside the high-pressure world of professional boxing in Las Vegas.

The casting brings two familiar faces into the fold. McGhie has made guest appearances on Poker Face, Abbott Elementary and Grey’s Anatomy, and played Jevon in Andrew Cohn’s film The Last Shift. He’s also known for his role as Deputy Joseph Harris in the crime drama Deputy. Frazier’s credits include A Different World and Delphi, with the Netflix A Different World series recently renewed for a second season.

Behind the camera, the Insecure reunion is fully intact. Penny is on board as showrunner, executive producer and pilot director, while Jax Clark executive produces for Hoorae alongside A Penny For Your Thoughts, with Jonathan Berry and Dave Becky producing for 3 Arts Entertainment. It’s a lineup that should feel familiar to anyone who spent five seasons in Issa Dee’s Los Angeles, and one that suggests the same sharp, observational eye is now turning toward the inner lives of Black men.

As QG previously reported, the project marks Rae’s fourth collaboration with HBO, following Insecure, A Black Lady Sketch Show and Rap Sh!t. With its leads now in place, the next milestone to watch is whether HBO takes the pilot to series.
