Five years after Insecure brought its beloved story of Black female friendship to a triumphant close, creator Issa Rae and showrunner Prentice Penny are heading back to HBO for a brand-new collaboration.

HBO has officially handed a pilot order to an untitled half-hour comedy series written and executive produced by Rae, with Penny returning as showrunner, executive producer, and pilot director.

Set against the high-stakes backdrop of Las Vegas, the upcoming series pivots the duo’s sharp observational comedy toward the complexities of male friendship, ambition, and identity. The pilot centers on Menzel, a 30-year-old barber and aspiring sports manager who serves as a “professional best friend” to JB, an up-and-coming professional boxer. Together, the two navigate vulnerability, insecurity, loneliness, and the double-edged sword of sudden success within a high-pressure environment.

The project marks Rae’s fourth collaboration with HBO, following her Peabody Award-winning flagship series Insecure, her executive producer role on Robin Thede‘s A Black Lady Sketch Show, and her two-season Miami comedy Rap Sh!t.

The pilot order arrives during a busy season for the creative duo. Rae and Penny are currently on the road for Insecure: The 10th Anniversary Tour, a 13-city live conversation tour celebrating a decade since the landmark comedy premiered on HBO.
