The long-awaited journey into the magical realm of Orïsha has officially begun. On Monday night, Paramount Pictures took over the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City for the exclusive premiere of the first trailer for Children of Blood and Bone, bringing together key cast members, culture, and fanfare to celebrate one of the most anticipated fantasy film adaptations in years.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film brings Tomi Adeyemi’s hit 2018 Young Adult fantasy novel to life on a grand scale. Attendees at the NYC event were treated to an immersive sneak peek at the film’s stunning visuals, including landscapes, stunt choreography, and a soundtrack infused with contributions from West African powerhouse artists like Tems, Burna Boy, and Fireboy DML.
Following the trailer showing, attendees enjoyed an intimate cast Q&A panel and afterparty. Director and co-screenwriter Gina Prince-Bythewood was joined on stage by stars Thuso Mbedu, Tosin Cole, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, and Regina King to discuss bringing the epic story to life.

Children of Blood and Bone follows Zélie Adebola (Mbedu), a young diviner on a dangerous quest to restore magic to her homeland of Orïsha after a tyrannical monarch strips it away and slaughters her people.
Alongside Mbedu, Cole, Lynch, Momoh and King, the fantasy epic features a star-studded cast including Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Viola Davis and Idris Elba. To bring the mythical world of Orïsha to life, Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler (Black Panther) drew heavily from authentic West African history, architecture, and spirituality, creating a rich, tactile aesthetic for the big screen.
During the Q&A segment, Prince-Bythewood shared how deeply personal the project has been, noting the technical precision and preparation required to bring Adeyemi’s sprawling universe to life without sacrificing its emotional core.
From four months of martial arts and axe-fighting training for cast members to vibrant color palettes, the team emphasized that no shortcuts were taken in crafting the high-budget fantasy epic.
Originally optioned years ago under Fox before transitioning to Lucasfilm and ultimately landing at Paramount, Children of Blood and Bone has weathered production shifts and online noise.
While author Tomi Adeyemi distanced herself from the film adaptation earlier this month, there’s still a lot of buzz for the onscreen world of Orïsha remains sky-high among fantasy lovers and moviegoers.
