The wait is officially over. Fans of epic, world-building fantasy have finally been given the first look at Paramount Pictures’ highly anticipated adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling young adult novel, Children of Blood and Bone.
Essence released exclusive first-look images as the film is gearing up to be a monumental cinematic event when it hits theaters on January 15, 2027.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), the project has spent years navigating development limbo, moving from Lucasfilm to Paramount. Now, with a big budget, breathtaking visual design, and a cast composed of literally the absolute best of Black Hollywood, the world of Orïsha is finally ready to claim its throne on the big screen.

Set in the majestic, West African-inspired fantasy kingdom of Orïsha, the story centers on Zélie Adebola, a young girl who remembers a time when the soil hummed with magic. Under the tyrannical rule of King Saran, a brutal raid was executed, stripping the magic-wielding maji of their powers and systematically slaughtering them, including Zélie’s mother.
Now, Zélie lives as a “diviner”, a marginalized citizen marked by white hair who has not yet come into her powers.
When a sudden twist of fate brings Zélie face-to-face with a rogue princess escaping the palace, she embarks on a time-sensitive quest to restore magic to her people, topple the crown, and outrun the ruthless prince sent to hunt her down.
Heavily inspired by Yoruba culture, language, and mythology, the story mixes magical high-adventure with visceral, real-world themes of systemic oppression, racial prejudice, and self-determination.

Thuso Mbedu leads the film as our fierce protagonist, Zélie Adebola, alongside Tosin Cole, who plays her loyal brother, Tzain. Amandla Stenberg steps into the shoes of the rebellious Princess Amari, while Damson Idris co-stars as the conflicted Crown Prince Inan.
The royal court is anchored by Chiwetel Ejiofor as the cold, tyrannical King Saran and Regina King as Queen Nehanda. Additionally, Cynthia Erivo portrays the relentless military leader Admiral Kaea. Rounding out the cast are Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Lashana Lynch, and Ayra Starr.
While the stunning first-look imagery has generated massive excitement, the film’s rollout is navigating a highly publicized, complex controversy behind the scenes.
Author Tomi Adeyemi, who fought passionately for years to write the film’s screenplay and is listed as an executive producer, has publicly and entirely distanced herself from the Paramount adaptation.
Taking to social media earlier this month, Adeyemi made it clear to her millions of followers that she has completely washed her hands of the film, stating: “There is a reason I will not post anything about the adaptation of my book. I have not seen the film, and I will not watch it.”
While the details behind her sudden departure remain speculative, the rift is believed to stem from creative differences during the scripting process and public friction surrounding the casting of Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari.
