In the public eye, actor Boris Kodjoe has long been the literal picture of peak physical health and style. But behind the scenes, the 53-year-old star was privately dealing with a reality that millions of men face but rarely discuss: his body was quietly running on fumes.
In a video and statement shared on social media, Kodjoe opened up about a recent health scare that completely changed his approach to wellness, offering a crucial wake-up call for men over 40.
“A few years ago, I lost myself and didn’t even notice,” Kodjoe revealed. “From the outside, I looked fine, on the inside I was running on fumes.”
A few years ago, I lost myself and didn't even notice. From the outside, I looked fine, on the inside I was running on fumes. I just assumed I was tired, and did nothing about it.

But when @nicolearip told me I looked grey, I went to get checked out. The results: pre-diabetic,… pic.twitter.com/nkPVQjiLBu
Like many high-achieving men, Kodjoe attributed his constant exhaustion to the everyday grind and the standard realities of getting older. He chose to ignore it. The turning point came not from a sudden medical emergency, but from a moment of honest observation from his wife, actress Nicole Ari Parker, who pointed out that he looked “grey.”
That comment prompted Kodjoe to finally schedule a comprehensive medical evaluation, including a full blood panel, body scans, and brain scans.
Despite expecting a clean bill of health, the results served as a stark reality check when Kodjoe was diagnosed with prediabetes, sky-high cholesterol, and critically low testosterone levels.
“I was shocked,” Kodjoe admitted. However, his physician noted that this profile is incredibly common. Countless men reach their 40s and 50s experiencing severe fatigue, chalking it up to “just getting older,” while completely ignoring preventable, underlying metabolic and hormonal shifts until they escalate into chronic illnesses.
Rather than letting the diagnosis discourage him, Kodjoe used it as a blueprint for a lifestyle overhaul. He focused on implementing a series of sustainable, everyday adjustments to his diet, sleep patterns, and fitness routine.
The results speak for themselves. After sharing a transformation post that went viral across the internet, Kodjoe reflected on how far he has come.
“I’m 53 now,” Kodjoe said. “I feel sharper, stronger, much more myself than I felt when I was 33.”
