Will Smith has already confirmed that he will be returning to the post-apocalyptic world of I Am Legend, and he’s bringing Michael B. Jordan along for the ride.
In a new interview, Smith revealed plot details about I Am Legend 2, the sequel to the 2007 box office smash. While fans assumed Michael B. Jordan might play the son of Smith’s character, Dr. Robert Neville, the King Richard star made it clear — that won’t be the case.
“He’s not my son,” Smith confirmed, shutting down one of the most popular fan theories.
Instead of picking up from the theatrical version, where Neville sacrifices himself to save others, the sequel will build off the alternate ending found on the film’s DVD release in which Neville lives.
“What we were gonna do was the prequel,” Smith explained. “And [Akiva Goldsman] was like, ‘But wait, what if we make a new version from the alternate ending, where your character is still alive and you know, Michael B. Jordan’s character currently is the head of a new settlement?”
That alternate ending, which fans have long praised, showed Neville discovering that the infected Darkseekers weren’t mindless monsters, but intelligent beings with their own form of society. Realizing he had become a villain in their world, Neville chose to return the infected woman he was experimenting on and leave the city, sparing lives instead of taking them. The sequel will use that version as its official canon.
While no release date has been confirmed, I Am Legend 2 already has fans buzzing.
Smith last teased the project during the press tour for his upcoming album and hinted that production could begin soon. Jordan, fresh off Creed III and Sinners, remains one of Hollywood’s most in-demand talents, so aligning schedules may be the only hurdle.
For now, the legend continues — with a new chapter, a new settlement, and two Black powerhouses redefining what survival looks like in the end times.
