Damon Wayans Sr. recently shared his thoughts on My Wife and Kids, the classic sitcom that won hearts all over the world. In a recent interview, he opened up about the idea of bringing the show back and why he’s not all in for a reboot.
While there was talk of rebooting the show, Wayans explained that the idea just didn’t feel right. “It was talked about,” he said to Revolt correspondent Ty Cole. “But for me, it’s like…we had it all figured out for the next season. I found out that my Jay [Tisha Campbell] was pregnant, and the next season would have been about what it’s like being older parents.”
Sadly, the show ended before they could dive into that storyline, leaving Wayans feeling like there was unfinished business. “We didn’t get a chance to finish it, to say goodbye or wrap it up,” he explained. “It just felt weird. And it felt like we would quickly be rehashing the same thing.”
For Wayans, My Wife and Kids had a great run, and it felt like the story had reached its natural conclusion. “It ran its course, and it was beautiful,” he said.
But instead of a full-on reboot, he’s open to doing something special. “I think I’d really be open to doing a special. A Wife and Kids special would be wonderful, where we kind of get a chance to wrap up the show in a more respectful way.”
Looking back, Wayans called My Wife and Kids one of the highlights of his career. He had a blast working with the cast, especially Tisha Campbell, who played his wife on the show. “It was one of the greatest moments in my career, doing that show with those people who I just love,” he said.
Instead of trying to recreate the magic with a reboot, a special would give fans a chance to catch up with the characters one more time and bring some closure to the story. It would be a way to honor the show’s legacy without having to repeat what’s already been done.
While a reboot is off the table, it seems like there’s a chance for My Wife and Kids to return in some form, just in a way that feels right.
For now, fans can continue to enjoy the original series, and who knows, maybe one day we’ll get that special we’ve been waiting for!
