This past Sunday, Bishop T.D. Jakes announced that he’s stepping down from leading the Potter’s House Church in Dallas and handing the reins over to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts.

The transition marks a huge shift for the church that Jakes founded in 1996, but it’s clear this decision is all about legacy and the future of the church.

During an emotional sermon, Jakes told the congregation that this move wasn’t just about family ties—it’s about ensuring the church keeps growing and evolving.

“This is legacy, not because they’re kin, but because they’re the kind,” he said. “They’ve immersed themselves into the DNA of this church for years.”

While Jakes is stepping down as the lead pastor, he made it clear he’ll still be active in ministry and community work moving forward.

The timing of the announcement follows Jakes’ heart attack scare in November, when he collapsed during a sermon and was rushed to the ICU. Reflecting on his nearly 50 years in ministry, Jakes talked about how the church needs new energy and fresh vision to adapt to the changing world.

“We need fresh vision, fresh blood,” he shared. “The world is changing, and the church needs to keep up.”

Sarah Jakes Roberts expressed her excitement to step into this new role, telling the congregation, “As your daughter, I’m so happy you’re going to get some rest.”

It’s clear that while her father may be taking a step back, the legacy of the Potter’s House is in good hands. The Jakes family is ready to usher in a new chapter for the church, with Sarah and Touré Roberts leading the way.
