More Than Just Fashion and Awards at This Year’s Golden Globes

The 75th Golden Globe Awards were held Sunday night. While this night is usually about fashion on the red carpet and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honoring the best in film and television, last night was about making a statement.

This year’s awards ceremony comes after many allegations of men using their power to overpower women in the workplace. This stretched across all industries from Hollywood to Government. Last night on the red carpet, all the stars wore black to support the Time’s Up movement, standing in solidarity with victims of sexual assault and harassment. Many men also wore Time’s Up pin badges or black shirts with their suits.

Oprah Winfrey gave an amazing acceptance speech after receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award where she spoke to not only the dissension in Hollywood but racism in America.

Sterling K. Brown, who became the first African-American man to win a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Drama also gave a very power acceptance speech. In his speech, he spoke to This is Us writer Dan Fogelman, saying “You wrote a role for a black man, that can only be played by a black man. I’m being seen for who I am.”
