Idris Elba is getting back into the spy game. The actor will star in and direct In Laws, a new action-comedy that puts him back in a covert operation.
Elba plays Carson Hughes, “a blacklisted secret agent who gets a shot at redemption.” The catch: he has to pull it off alongside a young, by-the-book rookie, stop a deadly plot, and get to a wedding neither of them can miss.
The two partners discover they have more in common than either of them expected, and the title hints that family is part of the fun.
Elba in Charge
This is not Elba’s first time calling the shots. He made his feature directing debut with the 2018 crime drama Yardie, set between 1970s Jamaica and 1980s London.
And audiences already know he can play the action-comedy straight man. In 2025, he teamed with John Cena in Prime Video’s Heads of State, playing a British prime minister with special-forces training.
With In Laws, he gets to do both at once, in front of the camera and behind it. He is also producing through 22Summers, the company he runs with Gina Carter.
Who Plays the Rookie?
That is the question fans will be asking. No co-star has been announced yet, and Deadline reports that more casting is underway. Cameras are set to roll in Spain in March 2027, so the answer could come soon.
The rookie role is a big one. The right young actor could turn In Laws into the kind of mismatched-partner pairing audiences remember long after the explosions fade.
