Music icon Luther Vandross still lives on through his music. Power of Love will take over New York City Center this Holiday season. The newly commissioned, one-hour ballet and musical tribute by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater celebrates the life and legacy of the legendary Grammy Award-winning singer.

Former Ailey resident choreographer Jamar Roberts brings to life Vandross’ beloved songs that chronicled universal emotions and experiences and became the soundtrack to millions of lives.

Power of Love was created in partnership with the Vandross Estate and Primary Wave Music. The upcoming Ballet was developed alongside Marcus Miller, Ron Gillyard, and Reginald Hudlin. Fans can expect new arrangements of Vandross’ classic hits such as Never Too Much, Here and Now, Dance With My Father, A House Is Not A Home, and Power of Love.

“The Luther Vandross Estate is thrilled to see Alvin Ailey, the country’s pre-eminent modern dance company, create a production built around the music of Luther Vandross,” David Gottlieb, manager of the Luther Vandross Estate, said in a statement. “The serendipity is special: both Luther and Alvin Ailey were born in 1950’s New York and grew to be forces in entertainment, respectively transforming R&B music and modern dance for all to experience. This creative partnership is bound to be memorable and unforgettable.”

The Power of Love

Over the course of a three-plus-decade career, Vandross has sold over 40 million records worldwide, scored 11 consecutive platinum albums, won eight Grammy Awards from a whopping 33 nominations, and three NAACP Awards. Recently, the singer was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Tickets for Power of Love are selling out quickly. Fans have helped generate significant buzz since its announcement. Leaders from both the estate and music management have expressed high enthusiasm.

Founded by Ailey in 1958, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of the most acclaimed dance companies in the world. With a repertory that boasts close to 300 works by more than 100 choreographers, it has performed in more than 70 countries across six continents. It has been designated a “vital American Cultural Ambassador to the World” by a US Congressional resolution.

Power of Love is scheduled for December 2 at New York City Center as part of the company’s holiday engagement and will run through January 3, 2027. Following the New York engagement, the production is set to embark on a North American tour in 2027.
