A24 and Peacock have officially unleashed the bloody first trailer for Crystal Lake, the highly anticipated eight-episode prequel series diving into the dark, origins-filled backstory of the Friday the 13th universe.

Set to premiere on October 15, the series shifts the spotlight away from the iconic hockey mask and onto the raw, psychological trauma that birthed the horror franchise. Starring Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees and featuring a main cast that includes William Catlett, the show explores how a mother’s profound grief curdles into unhinged vengeance.

Set in the summer of 1971, Crystal Lake follows single mother Pam Voorhees nearly a year after her young, sickly son Jason, played by Callum Vinson, tragically drowns at camp. Unable to shake her grief and convinced her son may still be out in the woods, Pam’s fragile world is upended when two strangers arrive asking uncomfortable questions about her past. Their investigation sets off a violent domino effect across the town, forcing the local community to reckon with a terrifying truth: the woods of Crystal Lake have become a breeding ground for revenge.

Alongside Cardellini’s transformation into horror’s most tragic killer, Catlett stars as Levon, a police officer caught in the escalating tension surrounding the lake. Catlett leads a talented ensemble alongside Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, playing Officer Dorf, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom.

“She’s only in the first Friday the 13th film for the last little bit, but she leaves this impression on the entire franchise,” Cardellini shared regarding taking on the legacy role originated by Betsy Palmer. “To dive into who she might have been, I thought, well, that’s something I’ve never done.”

Created and showrun by Brad Caleb Kane, known for IT: Welcome to Derry, Crystal Lake mixes the paranoid atmosphere of 1970s cinema with A24’s signature prestige horror aesthetic.

Kane promises a series that functions as both an incremental character study and a full-throttle, blood-soaked slasher. Cardellini teased that fans expecting signature slasher gore won’t be disappointed, noting that the production leaned heavily on stomach-churning practical effects.

All eight 60-minute episodes of Crystal Lake will drop simultaneously on Peacock on October 15, just in time for Halloween. Check out the trailer.
