The countdown to Hillman College’s return is on. With just over a month until the A Different World reboot premieres September 24 on Netflix, the streamer has dropped its latest teaser, and this one comes with a familiar melody wrapped in a brand-new voice.
Netflix confirmed that Brandy will perform the opening-credits theme for the sequel series, putting her own spin on one of television’s most beloved sitcom intros.
Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Brandy described the original series as appointment viewing during her own childhood, the kind of show she made sure never to miss. Taking on its theme song now, she says, means everything to her.
Her version keeps the instantly recognizable lyrics intact, yes, that “different world than where you come from” line is still very much present, while giving the arrangement a modern, reimagined sound. Brandy says that matching the original is no small task, but she’s especially honored to be stepping into the shoes of the artist who sang it first: Aretha Franklin. Following the Queen of Soul, Brandy says, feels like being welcomed into a legacy, and she’s hoping to honor it the way it deserves.
Brandy’s connection to A Different World goes back decades. Long before this opportunity came along, the show was already woven into her own story, she’s described it as an early source of inspiration that made her believe she could build her own path through hard work and ambition.
Seeing herself reflected on screen, she’s said, didn’t just resonate emotionally, it helped push her toward acting, a road that eventually led to iconic roles in Moesha and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, alongside her music career.
Getting the call to sing the theme song, she says, left her stunned, first at the news that the show was returning at all, and then at the idea that she’d get to be part of it.
Original cast member Dawnn Lewis, who co-wrote the theme song, is set to return for the new series in a guest-starring role.
A Different World returns September 24 on Netflix.
