Netflix’s infamous cancellation axe has swung once again, and this time, it has claimed a highly anticipated supernatural project with major creative muscle behind it.
The streaming giant has officially canceled The Boroughs, the sci-fi mystery drama executive-produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, after just a single season. Despite the heavy-hitting star power both behind the scenes and in front of the camera, the series will not be returning for a sophomore run.
The news comes as a surprise to many genre fans who hoped the Duffer Brothers’ golden touch, combined with a legendary ensemble cast, would secure the show a long-term home on the platform.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (the brilliant minds behind The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), The Boroughs offered a unique spin on the classic supernatural thriller.
Set in a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, the series followed a group of unlikely, aging heroes who had to band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they had the least of: time.
What truly set the show apart, however, was its phenomenal, veteran cast. The series starred a murderers’ row of seasoned Hollywood legends, including Alfre Woodard, Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, Denis O’Hare and Clarke Peters.
In an industry that frequently sidelines older actors, The Boroughs was celebrated for putting a group of seniors at the dead center of a big-budget sci-fi adventure.
While Netflix rarely publishes exact programmatic metrics, industry insiders point to the streaming service’s notoriously strict cost-versus-viewership algorithms.
For fans of The Boroughs, the cancellation leaves a bittersweet taste. It represents another promising, original sci-fi universe cut short before it truly had the space to spread its wings.
