The family of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells is looking for answers, and they have brought in some of the biggest legal backup in the country to help find them. On July 7, the Wells family officially retained prominent national civil rights attorney Ben Crump to advocate on their behalf following the teenager’s tragic death over the holiday weekend.
Wells, a student-athlete from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, traveled by boat with a group of friends to Horn Island, a popular barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, to celebrate the Fourth of July. According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Wells was last seen on the island around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
When the rest of the group returned to the mainland later that evening, Wells was not with them. Local authorities noted that, based on initial interviews, it appeared Wells may have chosen to stay on the island under the assumption that he would catch a ride back with someone else.
After his mother reported him missing Saturday night, an intensive multi-agency search was launched. The search came to a devastating end on the morning of Monday, July 6, when a U.S. park ranger discovered Wells’ body in the water near the northwestern tip of the island.
While law enforcement has stated that the investigation remains highly active and ongoing, an official cause of death has not yet been determined. As the community waits for autopsy results, Wells’ family is pushing for total transparency regarding what transpired during those final hours.
In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, Ben Crump echoed the family’s grief and underscored their demand for a rigorous investigation:
“Nolan Wells was a beloved son, teammate and friend who went out to celebrate the Fourth of July and never came home. His family deserves answers. They deserve the truth. We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light, and we call on investigators to pursue this case with the urgency and transparency this family deserves.”
Crump’s legal team has announced plans to launch an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the incident while simultaneously pressing officials for the timely release of all witness accounts, records, and forensic findings.
Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, took to social media to express her profound heartbreak and to appeal to the public, asking anyone who was on Horn Island that afternoon to come forward with any photos, video footage, or information that might help piece together the timeline.
