Michael Jai White confirmed in a recent interview on The Breakfast Club that Why Did I Get Married Again?, Tyler Perry’s long-awaited third installment in the beloved franchise, has finished filming. And from what White is sharing, this one is going to hit differently.

The film, coming to Netflix later in 2026, reunites the core cast that fans have been waiting on since the 2010 sequel Why Did I Get Married Too?

Jill Scott is back. Tasha Smith is back. Richard T. Jones, Lamman Rucker, and Sharon Leal are back. And joining the ensemble for the first time is Taraji P. Henson, a casting addition that White says more than delivers on its callout.

“Taraji, man, she kills it,” White told The Breakfast Club. “Everybody kills it, and there’s a young audience, man. These young actors are killing it.”

Janet Jackson, who was conspicuously absent from the first-look photos that surfaced from the Lake Como, Italy shoot last year, is not in this installment. White acknowledged the elephant in the room, but kept the focus on what is in the film rather than what isn’t.

Her character’s absence is addressed in the script, and White assured fans they will get some closure on that front.

The threequel centers on Marcus and Angela, White and Smith’s fan-favorite characters, whose daughter is preparing to get married. The reunion of the original couples forces everyone to reckon with a question that White says Tyler Perry has never quite put on screen before: what do your children not know about who you were before you became their parent?

“As parents, we always do that. They don’t know how messed up we were. I never saw a movie that dealt with that. The subject matter is stuff I hadn’t even seen in a movie before,” White shares.

The next generation is represented in full with White sharing that Da’Vinchi, who audiences know from BMF, plays White’s son in the film.

White also praised Perry for the way he is evolving behind the camera. He described an innovative production approach where actors stay in the moment between takes rather than breaking and then having to re-find their energy when camera angles change, a technique White says preserves performances in ways that are immediately visible on screen.

“People don’t realize because people get used to who somebody is and they don’t realize — yo, man, this cat is growing. In a way that I see as an artist. Dare I say, man, I’m putting a lot of his stuff into my repertoire,” White shared.

Why Did I Get Married Again? is coming to Netflix in 2026. A release date has not yet been announced.
