Jack’d is expanding beyond dating. The app, the largest dating platform for queer people of color in the U.S., has announced the inaugural Jack’d Film Festival, a new showcase and competition celebrating original films by queer creators, with a focus on stories that center the experiences and perspectives of queer people of color.
The festival will be judged by some of the biggest names in queer entertainment, including TS Madison, Miss Lawrence, Bobby Ashley, Mike Gauyo and Dyllón Burnside. Together, the panel will select the winner of the Grand Jury Award.
Both short and full-length films are eligible for a share of the festival’s $20,000 prize pool, which includes a $10,000 Grand Jury Award and a $10,000 Audience Choice Award. The Audience Choice winner will be decided by Jack’d members, who can vote for up to three of their favorite films directly in the app.
“Queer filmmakers have always created stories that challenge conventions, expand perspectives, and help people feel seen,” said Tyrus Townsend, Jack’d Film Festival Manager. “The Jack’d Film Festival enables a new crop of filmmakers to bring their stories directly to their audience, and gives audiences an active role in celebrating the filmmakers behind them.”
Submissions are open now through 5 p.m. PT on Wednesday, October 21, at jackd.com/filmfestival. The festival is open to all filmmakers, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation, as long as their submissions center the experiences, stories, or perspectives of queer people of color.
Selected films will stream exclusively in the Jack’d app from Monday, November 2, through Thursday, December 3. Viewers can watch on their phones or cast to Apple TV or Chromecast, and joining the app and taking part in the festival is free. Winners will be announced on Friday, December 4.
Through digital screenings, filmmaker programming and community voting, the festival aims to give queer filmmakers a new way to share their work directly with the audiences their stories are made for. More details on the official lineup, filmmaker conversations and special programming are expected in the coming weeks.
