After nearly 50 years in show business, comedy legend Eddie Murphy is making a major move into scripted television with The Chairman, a new drama series currently in development at Peacock. The project is expected to mark Murphy’s first live-action scripted television series role.
The Chairman comes from Matthew Weiner, the writer and producer best known for creating the award-winning Mad Men and for his work on The Sopranos. Weiner will produce alongside Murphy, with Universal Television and 101 Studios behind the project.
Details about the premise and Murphy’s character are being kept under wraps for now.
The move adds a new chapter to one of Hollywood’s most storied careers. The Golden Globe-winning actor first broke out on Saturday Night Live in the early 1980s before becoming a box office force with Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America and The Nutty Professor, later earning an Oscar nomination for his performance in Dreamgirls.
Eddie Murphy’s Next Chapter
Murphy has remained active in recent years, opening up about his life and career in the Netflix documentary Being Eddie and starring in the action comedy The Pickup. He’s also set to return as the voice of Donkey in Shrek 5, and that’s just the start of what’s on his plate.
Murphy is attached to a standalone Donkey spin-off film, a reboot of The Pink Panther in which he’ll play Inspector Jacques Clouseau, a biopic in which he’ll star as funk legend George Clinton, and a remake of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World developed alongside Martin Lawrence and featuring an ensemble cast of comedians.
For now, The Chairman remains in development, with no premiere date or full cast announced. Still, Murphy’s leap into live-action drama speaks to the lasting demand for one of the most recognizable entertainers of his generation.
