Charles D. King‘s MACRO Television Studios is deepening its bet on Black storytelling, this time with a partnership aimed at reaching audiences on their phones. It was recently announced that MACRO and MANSA Studios will jointly develop, finance, and produce an original premium vertical series, bringing premium storytelling to the rapidly growing mobile entertainment market.
MANSA Studios is a production and distribution label co-founded by David Oyelowo and Nate Parker, built around bringing culturally rich stories to audiences through new formats and platforms. The label’s credits include Newborn, the psychological thriller starring Oyelowo and written and directed by Parker, which the two produced together and released theatrically through AMC.
“MANSA has developed real expertise in the emerging vertical format, and we see this as an exciting opportunity to pair that experience with MACRO Television Studios,” said King. “We are looking forward to learning from the collaboration and seeing how audiences respond and explore innovation opportunities for the format.”
The news comes just days after MACRO’s acquisition of streaming service ALLBLK, signaling that King’s expansion across the media landscape shows no signs of slowing down.
Under the new partnership, MACRO Television Studios and MANSA Studios will share ownership of the underlying intellectual property while both participating in the project’s creative and strategic direction, with the deal spanning development, marketing, and promotion.
MANSA will lead production, bringing its deep experience building and distributing vertical content specifically designed for mobile-first audiences. MACRO, meanwhile, brings its track record for premium development, longstanding creative relationships, and a history of building culturally relevant, commercially viable programming across genres.
For Oyelowo, co-founder of MANSA Studios, the partnership reflects where the industry, and audiences, are headed. “MANSA was created to ensure that culturally rich stories can reach audiences wherever they are,” Oyelowo said. “As viewing habits evolve, we are embracing new storytellers, formats, and platforms that allow us to remain connected to our global audience while creating meaningful opportunities for a diverse array of talent.”
