When Netflix dropped Tyler Perry’s long-awaited sequel Why Did I Get Married Again?, fans quickly celebrated the return of the iconic franchise’s core ensemble. However, one major face was noticeably missing from the celebration: Janet Jackson, who starred as psychologist Dr. Patricia Agnew in both 2007’s Why Did I Get Married? and 2010’s Why Did I Get Married Too?

Addressing the elephant in the room on social media and during press for the film, Perry shut down any rumors of bad blood, clarifying that Jackson’s absence came down to scheduling conflicts and the emotional weight connected to the franchise.

According to Perry, he initially reached out to the entire original cast to ensure everyone was on board before moving forward with the project. While Jackson read and loved the script, her packed schedule ultimately got in the way. At the time of production, Jackson was locked into her concert residency in Las Vegas, and given Perry’s tight filming window, the logistics didn’t align.

“I called everybody. I said, ‘I’ll only do it if everybody does it,’ and everybody was in,” Perry shared in a video clip circulating on social media. “I talked to Janet, Janet was like, ‘Okay, let’s go, everybody’s in.’ She read the script, she loved the script, and then she’s like, ‘But I’m on my residency.’ I was like, ‘Well, I got a window here, this is the only window I have.’ She said, ‘Well, I’m here.'”

Beyond the scheduling roadblock, Perry also shared why returning to the franchise might have been difficult for Jackson. The filming of Why Did I Get Married Too? coincided with the sudden passing of her brother, Michael Jackson, in 2009.

“She also said to me, this was something that I thought was really powerful, she said, ‘I don’t know if I could revisit that period again,'” Perry recalled. “I didn’t think about it at the time, but this is when Michael died. The last movie was when Michael died, and we rallied around her to make sure that she was safe and had this moment… I want to say a shout-out to her, and I want to thank her big time for all the support and all these years and all she’s done for this franchise. Let’s give it up for Janet Jackson.”

Rather than writing Patricia off abruptly, the film addresses her absence right out of the gate during an opening exposition sequence. In the story, the group reunites in Lake Como, Italy, for the wedding of Marcus, played by Michael Jai White, and Angela’s, played by Tasha Smith, daughter. It is explained that Dr. Patricia Agnew is currently away on a major book and lecture tour while continuing her path of healing following the loss of her late husband.

The storyline allows the franchise to honor her character’s legacy without closing the door completely, leaving open the possibility of a future return if Perry decides to revisit the characters down the line.
