Disney+ has officially reversed course on Wonder Man. Despite renewing the critically acclaimed series for a second season in March and securing an Emmy nomination for lead star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the streamer has pulled the plug after just one season, according to Variety.
Executive produced by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton and showrunner Andrew Guest, Wonder Man premiered in January to rave reviews.
The cancellation is particularly striking given the accolades the show accumulated during its inaugural run. Abdul-Mateen II’s performance as Simon Williams, a struggling Hollywood actor and stuntman who acquires superhuman abilities, earned him an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor.
Alongside Abdul-Mateen II, the series featured Ben Kingsley reprising his fan-favorite role as Trevor Slattery, alongside Demetrius Grosse as Simon’s brother, Eric Williams (Grim Reaper), and Lauren Glazier.
Despite the positive reception and the early Season 2 greenlight, sources indicate that a writers’ room for the second season never officially opened. With writers now released to pursue other projects, Disney and Marvel ultimately opted not to proceed with another installment.
While Wonder Man boasted strong critical momentum, the cancellation reflects Marvel Studios’ broader strategic realignment under Disney CEO Bob Iger and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. Over the past year, the studio has actively scaled back its television output, shifting away from multi-season episodic commitments in favor of higher-efficiency, top-tier franchise anchors.
Outside of multi-season hits like Loki and Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel has increasingly treated its streaming projects as standalone entries rather than recurring series.
Although Wonder Man will not return for a second season, fans may not have seen the last of its characters. According to industry insiders, characters introduced in Wonder Man, including Abdul-Mateen II’s Simon Williams and Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery, could still cross over into future MCU feature films or other Disney+ ensemble projects.
For now, Wonder Man joins a growing list of acclaimed streaming titles caught in Hollywood’s post-peak-TV consolidation—leaving behind a celebrated single season and an Emmy-nominated lead performance.
