Universal Pictures has officially locked in the release date for Snoop, the upcoming biopic chronicling the rise and career of West Coast hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg. Starring Outer Banks breakout Jonathan Daviss as Calvin Broadus Jr., the film is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on August 6, 2027.

Helmed by director Craig Brewer, the project is being billed as the definitive biographical look at the rapper, mogul, and pop culture figure, charting his journey from Long Beach, California, to worldwide fame.

The project promises an unfiltered look at Snoop Dogg’s life, complete with an R-rating. During a joint appearance alongside Daviss at CinemaCon, Snoop made it clear that the film won’t be holding back or safe-playing his story.

“My movie is going to be rated R, I guarantee that. So get your parents’ permission,” Snoop told the crowd. “After my brothers got to tell their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it’s my turn.”

Daviss, best known for playing Pope Heyward on Netflix’s hit series Outer Banks, takes on the monumental title role. The film will also incorporate hits from Snoop’s extensive music catalog, featuring classics like Gin and Juice, What’s My Name, Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang, and Drop It Like It’s Hot.

Snoop marks the first film project to emerge under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment. Snoop Dogg serves as a producer alongside Death Row Pictures President Sara Ramaker and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, who previously produced the acclaimed 2002 Eminem biopic 8 Mile.

Universal has built a formidable track record when it comes to music biopics. In 2015, the studio released N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton, which featured LaKeith Stanfield briefly playing a young Snoop Dogg, earning over $200 million globally and earning an Academy Award nomination.

Snoop is gearing up for production with a release locked in for next summer.
