FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, the highly anticipated drama series from Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and the original producers of the acclaimed series Snowfall, has officially locked in its premiere date.
The eight-episode series will make its global debut on Tuesday, September 8 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on FX and Hulu, with subsequent episodes dropping weekly. The spinoff will also stream internationally on Disney+.
While the original series chronicled the devastating rise and ruin of the crack epidemic throughout the 1980s, The Drop moves us directly into the 1990s. The fallout of the drug trade is still heavily felt, but a powerful new cultural force is rising to claim the streets: West Coast rap.
The series centers on two of Snowfall’s most beloved and resilient survivors: Wanda Bell (played by Gail Bean) and Leon Simmons (Isaiah John). As they fight to reinvent themselves in a rapidly changing Los Angeles, they find themselves pulled in completely opposite directions.
Wanda enters the 1990s fueled by an unwavering belief that West Coast hip-hop has the power to fundamentally reshape American culture and heal their community. Driven to make her mark on the industry, she works to assemble a ragtag group of musical geniuses to lead them toward their dreams.
However, doing so requires navigating a highly volatile, dangerous overlap of music industry bureaucracy and street politics. Along the way, Wanda pulls in those closest to her, including her cousins Lamar Kinsey (played by Emmy-nominee Asante Blackk) and James Kinsey (Peyton Alex Smith). She also finds herself pursuing Artillery (Simmie “Buddy” Sims III), a brilliant but incredibly volatile local rapper who is already deeply entangled with law enforcement.
Wanda’s ambitions eventually land her an internship with Darryl “DG” Grant (Brandon Mychal Smith), a former D-boy who has transitioned into a powerful record label owner. While the internship opens major doors, it also threatens to destroy her relationship with Leon.
While Wanda is looking toward the future of entertainment, Leon is looking inward. Having spent years witnessing and participating in the destruction of his neighborhood during the height of the drug war, Leon has vowed to leave the streets behind for good.
Chasing his own profound sense of atonement, Leon dedicates his life to running a free community legal clinic designed to protect local residents from the systemic traps of the justice system.
As Wanda’s musical empire-building begins to overlap with the lingering shadows of the street, a deep philosophical and emotional tension arises between the two. How much is everyone willing to risk to build a lasting legacy in a world that is constantly trying to pull them back down?
The main cast includes Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams, and Demetrius Grosse. Additionally, fans of the original series will be thrilled to welcome back Quincy Chad, reprising his scene-stealing role as Big Deon.
FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga premieres on September 8.
