The Mount Rushmore of Black Rom-Com Kings

Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Kevin Hart, and Eddie Murphy make the Mount Rushmore of Black rom-com kings.
Rom-Com Kings

If a Black romantic-comedy film came out within the last 35 years, there is a high chance somebody fell in love during a cookout, wedding, poetry reading, or awkward airport scene, and we watched every second of it.

Society can debate literally anything, so it was only a matter of time before the debate on the Mount Rushmore of Black rom-com actors, but only a few men truly defined the genre.

Many actors played romantic leads. Others became the standard. Everybody has a favorite Black rom-com leading man, but when you start counting actual starring roles, the conversation changes fast.

This Mount Rushmore isn’t built on one classic movie; it’s built on a body of work. You’ll be surprised who made the list and who didn’t.

Morris Chestnut

Morris Chestnut

For more than two decades, Morris Chestnut mastered the art of the cool-but-emotionally-complicated leading man, becoming the face of modern Black romance through films such as The Best Man, The Brothers, Two Can Play That Game, Breakin’All the Rules, The Perfect Holiday and Think Like a Man, stamping him as a generation heartthrob.

Taye Diggs

Taye Diggs

Taye Diggs brings sophistication, charm and just enough toxicity to become one of the defining leading men in Black romantic comedy films. Debuting in How Stella Got Her Groove Back helped launch Diggs into the actor and heartthrob we all know, following up with films such as The Best Man, Brown Sugar, Baggage Claim, Set It Up, and The Comeback.

Kevin Hart

Kevin Hart

Kevin Hart redefines the Black rom-com male lead. Hart showcased humor and emotional humility within a lead role in films like 35 & Ticking, Think Like a Man, About Last Night, and Think Like a Man Too, into box-office success with timeless cast ensembles.

Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy is the originator. A lead who really brought the charm and romance to his film projects with commercial success. Murphy is the foundation to this list of actors with films such as Coming to America, Boomerang, You People and Coming 2 America.

Their legacy started with fresh narratives that influenced generations over the past 30 years, but they aren’t the only ones who influenced generations.

Mount Rushmore only has four spots, but the Black rom-com era was far too loaded to stop there. These honorable mentions helped define the genre just as much as the men carved into the mountain.

Jamie Foxx

Jamie Foxx

Whether Jamie Foxx is the smooth best friend, the comedic spark, or the unexpected romantic lead, Foxx elevates the energy of any rom‑com he’s in. His natural aura and talent make him a standout in a single scene. Films like Booty Call and Breakin’ All the Rules showcased his ability to lead relationship-driven stories. His versatility across genres makes his rom-com work especially memorable.

Michael Ealy

Michael Ealy

Michael Ealy is the soft-spoken and charismatic heartthrob in his romantic-comedy films. His smooth, on-screen presence in films such as Think Like a Man, Think Like a Man Too, and About Last Night balanced romance, vulnerability, and humor.

LL Cool J

LL Cool J

LL Cool J trades in his musical flow for an on-screen romantic flow in films such as Deliver Us From Eva and Last Holiday. Whether playing a charming love interest or a supportive leading man, J proves that he is a natural fit for love‑driven storylines, being the aerophobic flying for love or the smooth operator. Either way, he delivers every time.
