Mamoudou Athie Steals the Scene in A24’s ‘The Drama’
If there is one thing A24 knows how to do, it is assembling a cast that demands your attention. By now, you have likely seen the timeline-breaking trailer for The Drama, the studio’s latest romantic thriller that pairs Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as a couple on the brink of marital implosion.
But while the internet is busy dissecting every frame of the leads, there is another name on the poster that deserves your full attention: Mamoudou Athie.
Athie, who has been on our screen for years, stars alongside the heavy-hitters in what is shaping up to be the most chaotic wedding movie of the year.
The Movie: A Wedding Week from Hell
Written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli (Dream Scenario), The Drama is set to hit theaters on April 3. The premise is interstingly twisted: a happily engaged couple, played by Zendaya and Pattinson, finds their wedding week derailed when an unexpected turn sends everything off the rails.
In a scene teased in the trailer, the couple and their friends, played by Athie and Alana Haim, engage in a risky game where they must confess the “worst thing they’ve ever done.” What starts as a fun game quickly spirals into a nightmare when a revelation threatens to shatter the nuptials before they even begin.
Why Mamoudou Athie is the One to Watch
Athie has spent the last decade building a diverse resume that showcases a rare kind of versatility. He broke hearts as a sommelier-in-training in the Netflix drama Uncorked, terrified us in the sci-fi horror series Archive 81, and held his own in the massive blockbuster ecosystem of Jurassic World Dominion.
In The Drama, Athie steps into the psychological arena. While specific character details remain under wraps, his placement in that explosive dinner scene suggests he isn’t on the sidelines; he is a witness, and perhaps a catalyst, to the unraveling of a “perfect” romance.
The Drama arrives in theaters nationwide on April 3. Check out the trailer below.
