Daniel Kaluuya is bringing his talents to the New York stage. The Oscar winner will make his New York theater debut in Grass, the new play from Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, which will have its world premiere at Park Avenue Armory early next year.
Grass follows a mother and her son, played by Kaluuya, on a road trip through the American South. Along the way, the journey takes a fantastical turn as the pair imagine encounters with figures including Walt Whitman and Martin Luther King Jr. Full casting will be announced at a later date.
The production will run February 19 through March 28, 2027, with opening night set for February 26. It is presented by Park Avenue Armory in partnership with National Black Theatre, and Jacobs-Jenkins developed it as the Armory’s artist-in-residence.
The play reunites Jacobs-Jenkins with key collaborators from his Obie Award-winning 2014 production of An Octoroon, including director Sarah Benson and Tony-winning set designer Mimi Lien.
The stage is familiar ground for Kaluuya. Before his breakout in Jordan Peele’s Get Out, which earned him an Oscar nomination, the London-born actor came up in British theater and drew acclaim for his performance in Roy Williams’ Sucker Punch at the Royal Court Theatre. He went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, starred in Black Panther, Queen & Slim and Nope, and made his feature directing debut with The Kitchen.
Jacobs-Jenkins, meanwhile, is one of the most celebrated playwrights working today. His play Purpose won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 2025, a year after his family drama Appropriate won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play. His work often takes on race, family and American history with sharp humor and bold theatricality, which makes a road trip through the South with a cast of historical figures a natural next move.
Tickets are available through Park Avenue Armory.
