Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson may be adding a whole new chapter to his career as a wrestler, blockbuster actor, and entrepreneur. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the former WWE Champion revealed he is actively exploring a path in music, specifically dipping his toes into traditional country and old-school soul.

The revelation coincided with the release of the music video for his single, Your Dad, a heartfelt ballad he co-wrote with 2023 American Idol winner Iam Tongi. Featured on Moana: Voices Across the Ocean, a companion album to the live-action film executive-produced by Johnson and his wife, Lauren Hashian, the track serves as an intimate message of love dedicated to his daughters.

While Johnson is no stranger to singing, having scored a hit with Disney’s You’re Welcome and lending vocals to tracks by Wyclef Jean and Tech N9ne over the years, this move marks a deeper, passion-driven investment into making music on his own terms.

Reflecting on where he stands in his life and career, Johnson shared that music has always served as a personal anchor.

“I’m exploring that now… As you roll along in life, I’ve been real fortunate to be part of some really cool projects, and love it,” Johnson told Rolling Stone. “But music has always been such an anchor for me, and very specifically in genres that I love, like country music, traditional country music. And we’re exploring that now.”

He added that unlike big-budget Hollywood tentpoles, where creative success is tied to box office receipts and streaming metrics, making music provides a rare sense of personal artistic freedom.

“I’ve reached this point in my life and in my career where… when I wake up in the morning, I swing my legs out of bed, and whatever the thing is that I’m doing, I wanna feel like I’m just running towards it,” Johnson explained. “This song, for me, is just a song to my daughters. Where there’s no pressure of an expectation to deliver something that, ‘Well, how are the sales, and how’s the box office? And how’s the streams?’ It’s just from me to them.”

Drawing inspiration from legendary storytellers like Willie Nelson, Sam Cooke, Merle Haggard, and George Jones, Johnson shared that he wants to focus on authentic, heartfelt songwriting.

While he hasn’t formally announced a full-length studio album yet, his work on Your Dad and ongoing recording studio sessions suggest that listeners can expect more original country and soul tracks from the superstar down the road.
