Mychal Threets, the beloved viral librarian and current host of Reading Rainbow, has sparked widespread support across social media after sharing an open, honest update regarding his mental health journey. In a post shared to Threads on Monday, August 17, the 36-year-old literary advocate revealed that he is taking immediate, proactive steps to prioritize his well-being by checking himself into a medical facility.

Known online as “Mychal the Librarian” for his wholesome, infectious passion for books and literacy, Threets shared a vulnerable message with his community.

“I am not okay. Maybe I’ll never be okay. I’m seeking help. Going to the hospital tomorrow. In this moment I am safe. By God’s grace,” he wrote. “No matter what happens to me I will always be thankful for the extraordinary people in my life who worry, who help me. Thank you for your care. I will always love you. 💚”

His message was met with an outpouring of love, encouragement, and solidarity from fans, fellow educators, and mental health advocates praising his courage to seek professional help during a difficult moment.

Threets has been a prominent figure in the literacy space, stepping into the national spotlight when Reading Rainbow relaunched as a YouTube series in October 2025. Followed by millions across TikTok and Instagram, he has consistently used his platform to champion community libraries, children’s education, and mental health transparency.

He has previously opened up about his personal mental health struggles, including severe burnout that led him to transition out of his local library position in early 2024, and has been vocal about how finding community, connecting with young readers, and stepping into his partnership with PBS Kids helped give him a renewed sense of purpose.
