Kevin Hart returned to his comedic rap alter ego, Chocolate Droppa, for a surprise NPR Tiny Desk concert released on April Fools’ Day—and it was everything you would think would come from a Kevin Hart NPR Tiny Desk concert.
In true Hart fashion, the 10-minute set wasn’t just music—it was a hilarious set wrapped in outrageous and unpredictable one-liners.
The set opened with Hart—dressed in all black—dramatically stopping the beat just seconds into the first track. “I’m in all-black ’cause this is a funeral. It ain’t mine, it’s theirs,” he announced, mimicking gunshots for added flair. “Only time they have someone on Tiny Desk with no fucking track, I’m off the dome. Fuck a DJ!”
Backed by a live band he dubbed the Band of Brothas—whom he claimed to have met just moments before the performance—Droppa launched into a half-spoken, half-freestyled rant on how he’s the “big dog” who’s here to eat “the big bone.” You gon’ watch me eat off the bone! he barked, literal and figurative.
For those unfamiliar, Chocolate Droppa is Hart’s self-proclaimed rap legend alter ego, known more for his exaggerated bravado than actual bars. He last dropped a mixtape in 2016 under Motown Records, hilariously featuring real heavyweights like Trey Songz, T.I., and Nick Jonas.
At the Tiny Desk, Droppa performed snippets of songs like West Coast, delivering his verses with over-the-top hand gestures and face-twisting energy before abruptly cutting off the track each time with, Y’all not ready, man.
For the final act, he turned to the romantic—well, sort of. Love Song was a slow, pseudo-sensual freestyle packed with double entendres and exaggerated self-love. I’m bigger than you. I’m different, I’m bigger than you, he said with a smirk, before delivering the punchline: I’m talkin’ ’bout my dick.
Check it out.
