Dwight Howard expressed gratitude to his parents while being inducted into the Orlando Magic Hall of Fame. The ceremony, held before the Magic’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday, marked a significant milestone in Howard’s career and his legacy within the franchise.

Howard, who was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick by the Orlando Magic in 2004, spent eight seasons with the team from 2004 to 2012. During that time, he established himself as one of the most dominant big men in NBA history, becoming a force on both ends of the court with his scoring, rebounding, and shot-blocking abilities.

The highlight of his tenure came when he led the Magic to the NBA Finals in 2009 and the Eastern Conference Finals the following year. His accolades during his time in Orlando include five consecutive All-NBA First Team selections, the most of any player in franchise history, and three consecutive Defensive Player of the Year awards from 2008 to 2011 — a feat unmatched in NBA history.

Though the ceremony was meant to celebrate his on-court achievements, Howard’s speech took a deeply personal turn when he began to address his parents. Fighting back tears, Howard looked out at the audience and shared his appreciation for the unwavering support and sacrifices his family made to help him achieve his dreams.

“First, I want to thank my parents for being there and supporting me throughout this journey. The NBA is a very tough sport; it’s very difficult to go through, and you guys have been there from day one,” Howard said.

Howard continued to pay tribute to his father, who played a pivotal role in shaping his dedication and work ethic. “Pops, from 10 you believed in me; you told me that if I wanted to make it, you would sacrifice anything for me to get there, and you did. So, thank you.”

While his journey in the NBA has taken him to multiple franchises, including the Lakers, Houston Rockets, and Philadelphia 76ers, his legacy in Orlando is undeniable.

Dwight Howard’s name will forever be etched into the history of the Orlando Magic, but on Monday night, he made it clear that his parents’ belief in him was his most cherished honor.
