Nelly has responded to criticism following the announcement of his performance at Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration festivities.

Speaking candidly during an appearance on Willie D Live, the 50-year-old artist explained his reasoning, saying that his decision was not rooted in political allegiance but in respect for the office of the presidency.

“I’m not political. I’m not out here trying to tell anyone who they should vote for. This is not a campaign trail,” Nelly said clarifying that he doesn’t have political allegiance. He also acknowledged his limited knowledge of political matters, encouraging fans to research and make the best decisions for them.

“Do your homework and make your own decisions about it,” the St. Louis native shared.

While the backlash has been viewed as support of Trump, Nelly clarified that he doesn’t consider his performance an endorsement of the MAGA leader. Instead, he framed it as an opportunity to honor the presidency and those who serve the country.

“I respect the office,” Nelly said. “This isn’t politics for me. The politics are over—he won. He’s the president, he’s the commander-in-chief of what I would like to say is that is the best country in the world.”

Nelly spoke about his upbringing in a military family and how he’s performed for U.S. troops numerous times. He likened their sacrifices, which go past political affiliations, to his own decision to perform for Trump. “If these people can give their life for the office, Nelly can perform,” he said.

Nelly admitted that he was aware of the potential backlash but remained unfazed, pointing to his legacy and contributions to the community as reasons for fans to stay loyal. “If politics is above and beyond anything other than what that person stands for, [or] what that person has done, then I apologize if I quote-unquote let you down,” he said.

“I thought you were riding with me because I put on for my city,” Nelly added. “I didn’t know that I had to agree with your political choices.”

Nelly reiterates that his performance is not a political statement but an honor. “It is an honor for me to perform for the President of the United States, regardless of who is in office,” he said.
