On Saturday night, the Brooklyn Nets retired Carter’s iconic No. 15 jersey during a halftime ceremony in their game against the Miami Heat.
Carter is the seventh player in franchise history to have his number immortalized, joining Julius Erving, Buck Williams, and Jason Kidd.
The Carter family, former Nets teammates, ex-coach Lawrence Frank, team president Rod Thorn, and other basketball legends attended the ceremony. Messages of congratulations poured in from notable figures, including Eli Manning, Queen Latifah, and rapper Fabolous.
“This is truly something my family and I will cherish forever,” Carter said during the ceremony. “To be the seventh number to go up is insane. It is an honor to be up there with you gentlemen.”
Carter’s number banner now hangs next to Kidd’s No. 5—a fitting tribute to their dynamic partnership during one of the most successful eras in Nets history.
Carter’s journey with the Nets began in December 2004 when he was traded from the Toronto Raptors. “There was new life,” Carter said of his arrival in New Jersey. “My role in Toronto was just give me the ball, and I’ll get you a [basket]. But when I got here, they had a guy [Jason Kidd] … he made the game easier for me.”
In his four-plus seasons with the Nets, Carter cemented his place in the team’s record books. He holds the single-season record for points (2,070 in 2006-07) and ranks third in total points (8,834). Carter is also fourth in 3-pointers made (638) and playoff points (701). His contributions helped the Nets reach the postseason three times, with two playoff series victories during their run.
