It seems like we’ll be spending more time with our favorite Philadelphia school district staff and children.

ABC has renewed Abbott Elementary for its fifth season. The early renewal comes as no surprise, given the show’s consistent ratings success and impact.

“Instead of the cast making the announcement, a video of school children counting down and sharing the news was uploaded to the series’ Instagram account.

The renewal follows the show’s high performance during its winter return. The January 8 crossover episode with FXX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia became a series high, drawing 8.05 million viewers and a 2.57 rating in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic in multi-platform viewing.

It also received record-breaking streaming numbers during its first seven days on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

The series, created by and starring Emmy winner Quinta Brunson, follows the lives of dedicated teachers at a struggling public school in Philadelphia. The cast includes Brunson as Janine Teagues, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson, and Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard.

The show has cultivated a loyal fanbase through its unique blend of humor, social commentary, and authentic storytelling about the Philadelphia school system.

Season 4 of Abbott Elementary is currently airing on Wednesdays on ABC and streaming on Hulu the following day. The upcoming Jan. 22 episode will explore the challenges of hybrid learning as teachers navigate a city bus strike affecting student attendance.
