Billboard announced over the summer that Foxx was set to produce the “first-ever authorized full-length documentary on the late, great Luther Vandross.”

With Trilogy Films, the Vandross estate, and their partner Primary Wave, the new film will tell the story of one of the greatest singers of all time. At the time of the announcement, the new documentary had already been in production thanks to director Dawn Porter, according to becauseofthemwecan.com.

“Like so many, I have always loved Luther’s music, but I had no idea of the breadth and scope of his artistry. I think people will be surprised at how much he accomplished in his tragically short life. It is a joy to be able to share his true story,” Porter told reporters at the time.

It’s almost time for folks to take in the true story of Luther’s life. The film, Luther: Never Too Much, is set to premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, which is a major highlight for fans attending the 40th annual event.

How did he start his career? The eventual eight-time Grammy award winner began his career as a backup singer for artists such as Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and David Bowie. But it was in the '70s that Vandross rose to stardom thanks to his chart-topping album. Never Too Much became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard R&B charts.

As his career continued to blossom, he wrote and produced countless hits well before his tragic death in July 2005 at the young age of 54 due to complications of a stroke he suffered several years before.

Now, for the first time, folks can have access to never-before-seen footage that chronicles his rise to international stardom, his passion for the craft of music, and the personal struggles that highlight it all.

“Luther is one of our GOATs (greatest of all time). He’s one of the greatest singers in the history of music. It is truly an honor to be a part of the team to help bring this incredible story to the masses,” Foxx said in a statement.

The 40th annual Sundance Film Festival will transpire January 18-28 in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah.
