Jay Rock Awarded Key to His Native Watts Neighborhood

Jay Rock kicked off his Memorial Day Weekend the best way possible … after just receiving the key to the neighborhood where he was born and raised.

Jay was the guest of honor at the event in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts Friday. L.A. City Councilmember Joe Buscaino presented the key at the Nickerson Gardens Community Center … where Jay says he developed his basketball skills.

Getting the key to his hometown caps off what’s been a pretty great year for Jay, following the success of his hit track and a Grammy win for King’s Dead … the Black Panther soundtrack single he worked on with his friend and TDE labelmate, Kendrick Lamar.

To make the occasion even better, Rock also partnered with his label, TDE, and Lyft to donate $5,000 to the community center. TMZ caught up with Jay after the presentation on the basketball court, where he showed his excitement and gratitude for the moment.

He also shouted out Nipsey Hussle, and addressed YG’s comments about the “fake love” the late rapper has gotten after his passing. Jay doesn’t see it that way, but is definitely focused on carrying on the legacy Nip started.
