Netflix has released a first look at Tyler Perry’s upcoming holiday film The Gospel of Christmas, bringing together two of R&B’s most recognizable voices for a gospel-infused story about faith, redemption, and community.
The prolific filmmaker, who has built one of the most remarkable independent empires in Hollywood history, has announced he is stepping away from the entertainment industry and relocating to Puerto Rico.
The move comes as Perry continues a productive run with Netflix that shows no signs of slowing down before his departure. His most recent film, Doing Life, debuted on the streamer and immediately hit number one, and The Gospel of Christmas is set to follow. Last month, Perry also released Why Did I Get Married Again on Netflix, continuing a creative partnership with the platform that has given his work an expansive global reach.

The Gospel of Christmas stars Fantasia Barrino and Tank as Rebecca and Isaac, a preacher and his wife who travel to New York City with their family after Isaac is tasked with rebuilding a failing church in a rough neighborhood. Restoring it to its former glory will require nothing short of a miracle.
As the film unfolds, Isaac battles doubt, temptation, and a sinister adversary, ultimately having to rediscover his faith and the power of prayer to save his church, his family, and his community. It is the kind of story Perry has always been drawn to, one rooted in struggle, spirit, and the possibility of transformation.
“The vision for The Gospel of Christmas started with me listening to the songs that inspired me, that got me through some really, really rough times,” he told Todum. The soundtrack, produced by the legendary Kirk Franklin, spans contemporary and classic gospel, rap, and holiday music, making it as much a musical event as a film.
For both leads, the roles carry personal weight that goes beyond the script. Fantasia, who got an early boost from Perry earlier in her career, has spoken about the project as a tribute to her late grandmother, whose birthday fell on Christmas Day. Tank, currently starring as Eric Cooper in Hulu’s legal drama Reasonable Doubt, found something even more specific in his character. “He didn’t realize that he was writing exactly who I am versus just writing a story,” Tank said in an interview with Essence. “I was like, ‘Bro, you have no idea that this is me.’”
The Gospel of Christmas features appearances and musical performances from gospel legends including Shirley Caesar, Fred Hammond, CeCe Winans, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Yolanda Adams, Hezekiah Walker, and The Clark Sisters, a lineup Perry assembled with clear intention.

“It was really important to me to have some of the most incredible gospel artists there are on the planet be a part of helping me tell the story,” he said. “If you know gospel, you know these people, and if you don’t know gospel, just wait until you see this movie.”
Tank was direct about what he hopes audiences take away. “I hope that people get the spirituality of it all,” he said. “The meaning of it all in terms of what Christmas really means.”
For Perry, The Gospel of Christmas may be one of the final chapters in an extraordinary run of content before his move to Puerto Rico.
