The world premiere of HBO’s new docuseries JAY-Z In 8 at New York City’s iconic Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center was far more than a high-profile red carpet event. Thanks to a powerful initiative by the Shawn Carter Foundation, over 100 young men were outfitted in tailored tuxedos to attend the star-studded screening, stepping into a night designed to celebrate, empower, and uplift them.
Content creator and advocate Jordan Michael Pierre, attending on behalf of the Educational Alliance Foundation, captured the emotion and significance of the evening in a post on Instagram.
“Last night was about more than a documentary premiere,” Pierre shared as the caption to a video of young men in their tuxedos. “It was about showing our young men that they are seen, valued, and supported. @shawncartersf provided more than 100 young men with tuxedos for a night celebrating the release of a film about a man many of us grew up hearing about, admiring, and using his music as a reference point while navigating life… This is what community looks like.”
The eight-part HBO documentary series, executive produced by JAY-Z, Daniel Kaluuya, and legendary music producer Rick Rubin, who also makes his documentary directorial debut, pairs Hov with Rubin for an extended, album-by-album sit-down.
Revisiting 30 years of music, spanning landmark releases like 1996’s Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, The Black Album, and 4:44, the series dissects his songwriting process, childhood in Brooklyn’s Marcy Houses, and personal evolution as an artist and mogul. Ahead of its official September 18 television and Max debut, the NYC premiere served as a monumental homecoming.
The Metropolitan Opera House was packed with A-list talent celebrating hip-hop history, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya, and SZA, alongside music and hip-hop royalty like Questlove, Fat Joe, Gunna, Slick Rick, DJ D-Nice, and radio personality Angie Martinez. Media personality Angela Rye was also in attendance, alongside leadership from Roc Nation and HBO.
