After persistent fan demand on social media for a third Why Did I Get Married film, Tyler Perry is finally ready to catch us up on what Terry, Dianne, Marcus, Angela, Mike, and Sheila have been up to. Why Did I Get Married Again? is now streaming on Netflix, and the cast came together for a special screening in Los Angeles to celebrate the latest installment in the romantic dramedy.
Director, writer, producer, and Hollywood mogul Perry was in attendance, joined by returning cast members Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, and Sharon Leal. This time around, Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson joins the cast to bring the laughs and the drama.
Why Did I Get Married Again? reunites the couples for a destination wedding in Italy, as they celebrate Marcus and Angela’s daughter, Jasmine, who is preparing to tie the knot. After being apart for quite some time, they quickly learn that as much as things change, they stay the same. Realizing their children have grown up to be so much like them, they must reflect on the examples they’ve set and ask themselves that age-old question: why did they get married… again?
Henson enters the franchise for the first time in this installment, playing Roselyn, a wildly successful businesswoman who turns out to be a longtime member of the core friend group, even though audiences are meeting her for the first time. Her character is also introduced as the mother of Wesley, the athlete marrying into the family at the center of the film. For the Baby Boy actress, entering the Tyler Perry universe comes naturally. Henson recently starred in Perry’s film Straw.
First hitting theaters in 2007, Why Did I Get Married brought in a worldwide box office total of over $50 million, while the 2010 sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too?, finished slightly higher, with over $60 million. With 16 years between the sequel and the third installment, Perry’s profile has increased, his audience has grown, and his many projects have dominated on Netflix. The third season of his hit show Beauty in Black debuted at number two on Netflix’s Top 10, with over 81 million hours watched.
“20 years in the making… grateful,” Perry posted on social media about his latest film. Although some fans have expressed disappointment over music icon Janet Jackson’s absence from the film, Perry explained that there isn’t any drama behind the scenes. “Well, Janet, at the time, she was doing a residency in Vegas. So we couldn’t work out the time. But who knows what will happen in the future,” he said.
