Tyler Perry's Next Netflix Drama 'Doing Life' Gets Trailer Debut Starring Jay Reeves and Naomi Baker

Netflix has officially dropped the first trailer for Tyler Perry’s Doing Life, the upcoming urban drama written, directed, and produced by entertainment titan Tyler Perry. Scheduled to premiere globally on Friday, October 2, the film is an emotionally charged story centered on resilience, second chances, and the power of unlikely connections.

Starring Jay Reeves and Naomi Baker, the film follows Anika (Baker), a single mother fighting for survival, and Carousel (Reeves), a reformed ex-convict with untapped creative talents fighting to build a meaningful future.

According to Netflix’s official logline, the film is a “gritty and gripping urban drama that explores the life of a single mother fighting for survival and a reformed ex-con with untapped talents who forge an unexpected bond.”

The trailer reveals their history through flashbacks: Anika, pregnant at the time, was working as a correctional officer at Holloway Correctional when a violent prison riot broke out, and Carousel, then an inmate, saved her and her unborn child. Years after his release, the two reconnect, and what begins as an unlikely bond quickly evolves into a relationship that challenges the circumstances and family pressures surrounding both of their lives.

For Perry, Doing Life is more than just another entry in his expansive Netflix slate; it’s an opportunity to spotlight a rising Hollywood talent. Taking to X following the trailer drop, the media mogul expressed his enthusiasm for introducing audiences to the film’s lead actors.

“One of the things I really love doing is introducing new talent to you all. The performances that these kids put down in my next film are going to blow your mind. Some of you may not know their names now but I promise you won’t forget them after you see DOING LIFE!!” he wrote.

Joining Reeves and Baker, the cast includes Tamberla Perry, Karen Obilom, Danielle Moné Truitt, Jasmine Sargent, and Lucky Johnson.

Produced by Perry alongside longtime collaborators Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland, Doing Life marks Perry’s latest feature under his major creative partnership with Netflix.
