The legendary Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con was packed with horsepower on Saturday as Apple Original Films, Skydance Media, and Mattel Studios officially unveiled the first trailer for Matchbox The Movie.
Fronted by John Cena and helmed by Extraction director Sam Hargrave, the globe-trotting action comedy promises to turn the iconic die-cast toy cars of our childhoods into an adrenaline-fueled cinematic ride. Attendees at the panel were treated to a nearly three-minute first look at the film, which is set to premiere globally on Apple TV on Friday, October 9.
Rather than taking a literal approach with animated or talking die-cast cars, the big-screen adaptation uses the classic Mattel brand as a narrative foundation for a family-friendly espionage adventure.

Written by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan), Matchbox The Movie centers on a group of lifelong childhood friends living quiet lives in a small town. Their world is turned completely upside down when their long-absent former ringleader, Sean (John Cena), suddenly reappears. The catch? Sean is now a high-level undercover CIA agent, and he didn’t exactly return home for a peaceful reunion.
When Sean inadvertently brings a global syndicate of dangerous operatives right to his hometown’s doorstep, he unwittingly pulls his old, unsuspecting crew into a frantic, international pursuit to save the planet.
The film features Jessica Biel (The Sinner, Candy), Sam Richardson (The Afterparty, Veep), and Arturo Castro (Broad City, Narcos), alongside Teyonah Parris (The Marvels, WandaVision) and Danai Gurira (Black Panther, The Walking Dead).

Rounding out the cast are Golshifteh Farahani (Extraction, Invasion), Corey Stoll (Ant-Man, Billions), and Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit, Presumed Innocent).
Matchbox The Movie hits Apple TV on October 9. Check out the trailer.
