BET has announced a 10-episode revival titled ComicView: Rooftop Series, premiering on the network on June 30 at 9:30 p.m. ET. But while fans of the original show will instantly recognize the raw, unfiltered energy of the performances, this reboot is trading the traditional, dimly lit indoor comedy club stage for an ultra-sleek, open-air rooftop backdrop in Hollywood.
First debuting in 1992, the original ComicView was far more than just a late-night television show; it was the ultimate proving ground for Black comedic royalty. Over its historic run, the platform helped launch, elevate, and solidify the careers of global superstars like D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, Sommore, Kevin Hart, Sheryl Underwood, and Bruce Bruce, among countless others.
Hosted by comedian Chris “CP” Powell, the series is set to bring a stellar, highly curated roster to the microphone. Each episode will spotlight three distinct comedians, with a lineup that features some of the funniest voices in the game, including Tony Roberts, Ryan Davis, Darren Fleet, Shuler King, Ian Lara, D’Lai, Amir K, and more.
To elevate the experience even further, BET is promising plenty of spontaneous energy, including crowd interactions, celebrity drop-ins, and organic viral moments that will keep audiences talking long after the cameras stop rolling.
For Powell, taking the helm of the legendary showcase is a full-circle, emotional milestone.
“I’m super excited to be a part of this iconic brand. It’s an honor to put my name in history as one of the few hosts of ‘ComicView,’” Powell told Variety. “Growing up in Detroit, we didn’t always have cable, so ‘ComicView’ was my go-to as an aspiring comic. It was my daily chance to experience the greats. And here I am…”
