Omar Epps is entering 2026 with one of his most gripping roles yet. The acclaimed actor is leading Moses the Black, a new crime drama from Fathom Entertainment that reimagines an ancient story of transformation through the lens of modern-day Chicago.
Executed-produced by 50 Cent, the film hits theaters January 30, 2026.
Epps stars as Malik, a once-feared Chicago gang leader whose past is waiting for him the moment he steps out of prison. He’s a man trying to change his life, but redemption rarely comes easy — especially when the streets you once ran are still running after you.
The story is directly inspired by Saint Moses the Black, a fifth-century figure whose own journey took him from violent gang leader to one of history’s most powerful symbols of forgiveness.
In the film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Chukwudi Iwuji portrays the titular saint, appearing in visions and parallel storytelling that mirrors Malik’s struggle to reclaim his life.
The teaser opens with Malik walking free from prison walls, but not free from the violent world he helped build. On one side, he’s trying to rebuild, to choose love, peace, and a future that looks nothing like his past. On the other, old rivals and hungry newcomers are circling.
The tension rises with the introduction of 2wo-3ree, a volatile young member of Malik’s former crew who’s stirring up influence and challenging Malik’s legacy. Wiz Khalifa, making only his second-ever film appearance, takes on the role — bringing raw unpredictability to the character.
Malik’s greatest threat, however, may be Straw, played by Quavo in one of his biggest acting roles yet. Straw is the rival who never forgot, never forgave, and never stopped plotting. And in Moses the Black, he’s ready to bring war to Malik’s doorstep.
The film layers Malik’s present-day chaos with flashbacks and visual parallels to the original Moses the Black, creating a dual narrative about choice, consequence, and the possibility of rebirth. It’s a spiritual thriller without losing its grit, grounded in Chicago’s reality while reaching for something timeless.
Moses the Black also features a strong ensemble: Corey Hendrix, Cliff Chamberlain, Ahmad Ferguson, Sambou “Bubba” Camara, Kierra Bunch, Skilla Baby, and former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. Khalifa also composed the film’s original soundtrack, with Quavo joining as one of the featured artists, adding an authentic sonic energy to the world the film builds.
Moses the Black premieres exclusively in theaters on January 30, 2026. Check out the trailer.
