Adrian Holmes Joins Alpha Phi Alpha After Portraying a Member in ‘Bel-Air’

Adrian Holmes joins Alpha Phi Alpha in real life after portraying a brother on Bel-Air, bringing his role full circle.

Adrian Holmes is no longer just playing an Alpha, he is one.

Over the weekend, Bel-Air star Adrian Holmes was officially initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated through the Tau Epsilon Lambda chapter in Columbia County, Georgia.

The Canadian-born actor, best known for his role as the reimagined Uncle Phil in Peacock’s hit drama series, took a step off-screen that mirrors his on-screen character’s legacy.

In Bel-Air, the modern retelling of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Holmes’ version of Uncle Phil is portrayed as a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha. The show, which first premiered in 2022, pays homage to HBCU culture and the historical significance of Black Greek-letter organizations, something that wasn’t fully explored in the original ‘90s sitcom.

One standout moment in the series that caught fans’ attention was a scene where Uncle Phil joins the Alpha brothers in a step routine at a charity event.

While Holmes wasn’t a member at the time, he showed up with serious energy and respect, learning the choreography directly from real Alpha brothers who helped him bring authenticity to the scene.

Now, life has officially imitated art.

His initiation is a full-circle moment not just for Holmes, but for fans who appreciated the cultural layers brought to Bel-Air. For Alpha Phi Alpha, the decision to be involved in the series wasn’t taken lightly. According to Executive Producer Rasheed Newsom, the production team approached the organization with care and transparency.

“We reached out to the Alpha’s leadership with our request,” Newsom recalled. “They requested to see the script and we did something you NEVER do in film—we let them read it.”

Alpha Phi Alpha appreciated the respect, but they did offer one key note. “Instead of having the Alphas play dominoes, leadership requested they play chess,” said Newsom. “We happily obliged.”

As Bel-Air continues to push forward with nuanced portrayals of modern Black life, Holmes’ personal decision to join Alpha Phi Alpha adds another layer of authenticity and resonance to his role. His journey from actor to Alpha serves as a powerful reminder of how representation can evolve into real-world connection.

Bel-Air has begun filming its fourth and final season. We look forward to seeing what will be in store.
