The Top Five Trends from Fall/Winter 2020 Menswear Runways

To say we are currently living in surreal times is an understatement. However, just a few weeks ago, the fashion world was in the midst of its biannual "fashion month," including the usual back-to-back fashion shows and industry events across New York, London, Milan and Paris. This season, menswear shows commanded just as much attention as womenswear presentations and there was A LOT to dissect from the offerings. To assist with key takeaways we can expect to see later this year, QG's fashion editor, Aaron Campbell, has compiled a list of the top five fashion trends from the fall/winter 2020 menswear shows.

Razzle Dazzle

With the passing of every season, men’s fashion continues to get flashier and flashier.  This season, the sparkle of the menswear collections was more literal than ever, with many designers featuring sequin and crystal-embellished garments in their collections.  Balmain gave us bedazzled bombers while Valentino sent a full seafoam green sequin suit down the runway.  However, Dior took the cake with its finale, hand-embroidered coat covered in thousands of crystal and sequin beads.  If you want to cop the trends but don’t have thousands to spend on a single item, ASOS offers cost-saving options that don’t sacrifice the bling.

Prints Galore

In the mood to make a splash but crystals aren't really your thing, try prints.  And no, I don’t mean just a printed shirt or even a patterned pair of pants; pick a print and go for it head to toe (or at least ankle).  Virgil Abloh gave us a cloud-filled suit, shirt and tie combinations at Louis Vuitton, while Prada went for a geometric feel.  If you want to go for this look but don’t want to break the bank, your best bet is to find a patterned suit, like this one also from ASOS, and choose a corresponding shirt (it may be difficult to find an exact match).  Either way, if you choose to rock this trend you are sure to stand out in any crowd.

Italian Classics

For the past few years, it seems like fashion designers have tried to prove who can make the most innovative, unorthodox, and down-right outrageous version of a menswear staple, the suit.  However, this season, many designers were taking a “back-to-basics” approach to suiting, without being basic at all.  Classic Italian brands known for their impeccable tailoring were in full-form, and many other fashion houses followed their lead. Italian stalwarts like Bruncello Cucinelli and Brioni gave us a classic suit and separates line-up, and American powerhouses like Ralph Lauren also offered well-tailored, real-world clothes for grown men.  If Brunello or Ralph isn’t in your budget, try J. Crew or Suitsupply for a similar aesthetic.

PETA Who?

Typically a staple in womenswear, like so many other things, fur has now found its way into the men’s camp.  While not completely foreign to menswear (Bad Boy Records in the 90s anyone), fur coats took runways by storm this season and provided men with a new, more luxurious alternative, to stay warm than in seasons past.  Raf Simmons and Fendi were just a few brands that featured full length real and faux creations, so look out for more animal skins on the sidewalks come winter.  If you too want to stay extra warm, check out Urban Outfitters for more affordable fur options.

All (whatever color you choose) EVERYTHING

While the monochromatic look is by no means a new trend in men’s or women’s fashion, from the looks of things, it shows no signs of letting up.  This season stand out looks took the form of all-white/cream and all-black ensembles, such as at Tom Ford and Vetements.  This is possibly the easiest trend to interpret, particularly if you are looking to do the look for less.  If you don’t want to do a monochromatic black or white look, pick a bold color or even try an all-denim look, starting with this barn jacket from Lee.
