Tyler Perry is making a big move for his next chapter. The Hollywood mogul announced on the Today Show that he plans to step back from his heavy workload and move to Puerto Rico.

“Yes, I am officially—you’re the first to hear this,” Perry told Today Show special correspondent Justin Sylvester. “I am officially moving to Puerto Rico. No, this is real.”

Perry has spent more than 30 years building his impressive Hollywood career. He debuted his first stage play, I Know I’ve Been Changed, in 1992, but the production struggled to attract an audience. Perry reworked the project in 1998, and it catapulted him into superstardom.

An episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show inspired Perry to pursue his Hollywood ambitions. He went on to write, direct, and produce stage plays, television shows, and films. Throughout his career, Perry has created more than 1,600 hours of episodic television and nearly 28 films.

His latest film, Why Did I Get Married Again?, reached the number one spot on Netflix just hours after its premiere.

Tyler Perry’s Next Chapter

“Yep, moving to Puerto Rico at the top of the year, and I’m pulling back a whole lot,” Perry told Sylvester.

Perry said he needs to “slow down.” As he recently celebrated his 57th birthday this September, he also wants to spend more time with his 11-year-old son.

“Having this opportunity and this moment to be a father and give him all the love that I never had has been really, really healing,” Perry said.

Perry also explored the importance of slowing down and enjoying his hard work in his 2023 documentary, Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story. In the film, 8-year-old Aman asks his father, “Why does he work so hard?”

“Why do I work so hard?” Perry responds. “Because I want you to have a really good future, and I want us to have a really good life. We can travel and have fun and help other people. So, don’t you think that’s a good idea?”

Perry still has several projects in the works before he makes his planned move. His upcoming projects include Doing Life and The Gospel of Christmas.
