What began as a regular Thursday morning at NBC’s TODAY show took a sudden, alarming turn when an intruder managed to breach studio security, target anchors Al Roker and Craig Melvin, and shout racial slurs in a restricted backstage area.

The tense incident, which unfolded around 9:00 AM on July 16, has put a spotlight on the security measures protecting one of the nation’s most popular morning broadcasts. Thanks to the show’s staff and security team, no one was physically harmed, and the suspect was quickly taken into custody by the NYPD.

According to law enforcement sources, the suspect, identified by authorities as Andrew Truelove, entered 30 Rockefeller Center from the public plaza. The 41-year-old was reportedly able to slip past security checkpoints and navigate a stairwell leading into a restricted backstage vestibule near Studio 1A.

Upon entering the private area, Truelove was reportedly asking staff members for longtime TODAY weatherman Al Roker. When he was unable to find Roker, he instead crossed paths with co-anchor Craig Melvin, who was preparing backstage.

Witnesses and police reports indicate that Truelove confronted Melvin, lunging at the anchor while hurling a series of aggressive racial slurs, including the n-word. Melvin remained calm, immediately flagging the threat to on-set security. Staff members and security guards rushed to intervene, successfully pinning Truelove down and detaining him until New York Police Department officers arrived.

Truelove was found to be unarmed. Both Melvin and Roker were back on set and hosting the live broadcast within 15 minutes of the suspect’s removal. Neither anchor made mention of the unsettling incident during the remainder of the show.

Following the arrest, NBC News and the TODAY show released a joint statement confirming the breach and reiterating their commitment to employee safety:

“There was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio. An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured. TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.”

According to court records, the suspect has a lengthy criminal background, including a recent felony conviction for criminal mischief and multiple pending cases in New York, including misdemeanor assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal trespassing.

With news of the backstage confrontation spreading rapidly across social media, fans and colleagues flooded the internet with messages of concern and support for Melvin.

The 47-year-old anchor took to Facebook on Thursday afternoon to quiet the noise and reassure his audience that he is safe and ready to get back to work.

“Hey everyone,” Melvin wrote. “I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I’m doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on The Today Show.”
