Hillman College is officially opening its doors to a new generation. Netflix has finally released the first teaser and confirmed the release date for the highly anticipated A Different World spinoff.
The sequel series shifts the spotlight to Deborah Wayne (played by Maleah Joi Moon), the “lovingly sheltered” youngest daughter of iconic couple Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. Described as a free spirit with a big heart and a flair for the spotlight, Deborah is navigating her own path at Hillman while carrying the weight of the Wayne family name.
Joining Deborah Wayne is a new ensemble of students, each bringing a unique background to the Hillman campus. Among the new faces is Rashida Duvall (played by Alijah Kai), a determined first-generation student majoring in criminal justice, alongside Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a high-profile five-star athlete who makes the unconventional choice to prioritize legacy over traditional recruitment paths.
The campus dynamic is further rounded out by Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a sharp psychology major who often finds it easier to navigate his peers’ issues than his own, and Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a small-town girl raised in the church who is beginning to carve out her own personal values. Completing the group is Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur who is learning to find the courage necessary to follow his specific creative vision.
While the new class takes center stage, the spinoff stays true to its roots with the return of “legacy favorites.” Fans can expect to see Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert), Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne), Cree Summer (Freddie Brooks), and Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson) reprising their iconic roles as they welcome the next generation home.
The “hopeful dramedy” is led by showrunner, writer, and executive producer Felicia Pride. The project also sees the return of Debbie Allen, who serves as executive producer and director. Rounding out the powerhouse executive production team are Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Mandy Summers.
True to the original’s spirit, the series remains unapologetically centered on the richness and complexity of the Black experience, set against the unique rituals, humor, and nuances of an HBCU.
A Different World sequel will premiere on Netflix on September 24.
