Voltron is not coming to a theater near you. Amazon confirmed at its upfront presentation this week that the live-action adaptation of the classic 1984 mecha anime will bypass cinemas entirely and debut directly on Prime Video later this year.
The decision was not a surprise; the film was always intended as a streaming original, but the formal confirmation puts a lid on any remaining hope that Amazon might change course and give it a theatrical window.
The film stars Henry Cavill in the lead role alongside Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Rita Ora, John Kim, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, and Tharanya Tharan.
Rawson Marshall Thurber directs it from a screenplay he wrote with Ellen Shanman, with Todd Lieberman, Bob Koplar, and David Hoberman producing, and filming wrapped in Australia in the first half of 2025.
Based on the original animated series that followed five young space pilots operating giant robotic lions that combine to form the mega robot Voltron, the live-action film is expected to focus on a new generation of pilots rather than directly adapting the original story.
The source material has a devoted global fanbase and a franchise history that spans decades of animation, toys, and comics, making it exactly the kind of IP that studios have been racing to adapt.
Amazon is betting that Voltron can replicate the streaming success of a handful of big-budget action titles that skipped theaters and landed as Prime Video originals. Similar to Road House, the Jake Gyllenhaal remake that became one of Prime Video’s most-watched films; Coming 2 America, the Eddie Murphy sequel that moved from theatrical to streaming during the pandemic and drew massive opening weekend numbers; and The Tomorrow War, the Chris Pratt sci-fi action film that became a summer hit without a single cinema ticket sold.
Voltron is coming to Prime Video in 2026. A release date has not yet been announced.
