Earth Wind & Fire

If there is anyone we trust to tell the story of one of the greatest funk and soul bands in music history, it is Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. Now, the Oscar-winning filmmaker and musical encyclopedia is bringing the story of Earth, Wind & Fire to the big screen, and it is set to make a massive debut.

Questlove’s highly anticipated documentary about the legendary band will officially serve as the opening night premiere for the 25th Anniversary of the Tribeca Festival.

The selection is a perfect match for Tribeca’s 25th-anniversary milestone. The festival, which was originally founded in the wake of 9/11 to revitalize lower Manhattan, has a long history of celebrating the intersection of film, music, and New York culture.

Kicking off a quarter-century celebration with the genre-defying legacy of Earth, Wind & Fire is a guaranteed way to set a high-energy tone for the entire event.

Following the massive success of his Academy Award-winning documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), Questlove has proven himself to be a master archivist and storyteller. His deep reverence for Black musical history makes him the ideal director to capture the magic of Earth, Wind & Fire.

Founded in 1969 by the late, great Maurice White, the band created an entirely new sound by seamlessly mixing R&B, soul, funk, jazz, pop, and African rhythms. With timeless hits like September, Let’s Groove, Shining Star, and Reasons, they didn’t just top the charts; they created the soundtrack for generations of cookouts, weddings, and parties across the globe.

While exact details about the documentary’s unseen footage and interviews are still under wraps, fans can undoubtedly expect a meticulous, soulful, and visually stunning deep dive into the band’s cosmic origins, their iconic stage shows, and their lasting cultural impact.

As Tribeca gears up to celebrate 25 years of cinematic excellence, this opening night premiere is already shaping up to be the hottest ticket in town.
