HBO’s upcoming DC Studios drama Lanterns has added a veteran to its cast. Nicole Ari Parker has landed a recurring role as Bernadette Stewart, the mother of John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre), according to Variety.
Parker’s character, Bernadette, is described as “formidable and tenacious,” a woman who refuses to back down in the face of adversity. She is a fiercely protective mother who has spent her entire life ensuring that she and her family do not get overlooked.
Her relationship with John Stewart will be crucial in shaping his journey from a determined U.S. Marine to an intergalactic hero wielding the power of the Green Lantern ring.
The highly anticipated Lanterns series follows Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart, two members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic force tasked with protecting the universe from cosmic threats. Their story is described as a gritty mystery that plays out like True Detective in space, as the two investigate a dark secret buried on Earth.
The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen as the infamous Green Lantern villain Sinestro.
With Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective: Night Country) as showrunner and executive producer, Lanterns promises to deliver a fresh, mature take on the Green Lantern mythology.
HBO has yet to announce an official release date for Lanterns, but the series is expected to be one of DC Studios’ biggest streaming projects under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
